Town of Sedgewick Ready to Supply Fast Internet

The Town of Sedgewick installed a 96′ tower last week which will give the municipality the ability to provide internet service to its residents and local businesses. The Town is purchasing bandwith from Bell Axia and is expecting to make full connection in the coming days which will allow those within Sedgewick and the rural outskirts to recieve speeds of up to 50mbps. The Town also has plans to provide residents of the Village of Lougheed with the service as well in the near future.

The endeavor is a partnership between the Town and Nutec Electrotel out of Camrose. Whereas Nutec will look after the installs and service maintenance, the Town is responsible for the billing. 3 packages are available to serve a variety of needs. #REDNEK Tour to make stop in Sedgewick

The Town of Sedgewick is one of nineteen stops booked on the first leg of the recently announced #REDNEK MUSIC FEST tour in which award-winning and Alberta-born singer/songwriter Gord Bamford will be joined on stage by a number of the hottest emerging acts in the country.

The tour lands at the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre on April 18th, 2019 and aside from Lacombe’s Bamford, will star multi-platinum, JUNO award-winner Jess Moskaluke and feature a knock-out lineup of other homegrown country talent including Eric Ethridge, Cory Marks, Andrew Hyatt, Ghost Boy and Duane Steele.  The tour will support Bamford’s latest single “To Get To You”, a duet that features Moskaluke, as well as the success of his previous single “#REDNEK” which is what inspired him to take a traveling festival to the road with like-minded artists.

Bamford, who was born in Australia but moved to Alberta when he was five, is no stranger to Canadian country music fans due to being one of the most decorated artists in the country with twenty-six Canadian Country Music Association awards to his credit.  To date the 43 year-old has released nine studio albums which include 39 singles, 20 of which were turned into music videos.  Within those he has accumulated seventeen top-ten hits and two number one singles which include “Dive Bar” and “When Your Lips Are So Close”.

The two-hour show is slated for Saturday, April 18th with doors opening at 7pm and live music starting at 8pm with a yet-to-be-determined supporting act. Tickets are on sale Monday, November 25th and can be purchased at Sedgewick Town Office, Sedgewick and Killam Co-op grocery outlets or online at ticketmaster.ca.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Battle River Splash Zone were Kim Rempel and Shelby Boyd.

Community Health Action Plan

Flagstaff County, as nominated by Flagstaff Family & Community Services (FFCS) was chosen as one of 15 communities in Alberta to take part in a Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) pilot project that focuses on mental health, mental illness and community well-being in Rural Alberta.

The Goal is to support 150 rural communities over the next 3 years, to develop community road-maps and actions plans through the Rural Mental Health Project (RMHN)

The Vision for this project is to support mental wellness in rural communities. CMHA believes mentally healthy communities think broadly about mental health and mental illness. This includes, but goes beyond access to treatment centres… think: Agricultural & Community Societies; service organizations and programs and committees (such as AHS – Building Blocks program, Flagstaff Beaver Early Childhood Coalition, Battle River Spray Park at Sedgewick Lake Park…)

To facilitate this project, Holly Bovencamp has been trained and is preparing to form a coalition of interested persons to set direction, generate solutions and implement a road-map/Action Plan dedicated to supporting a mentally healthy region.

Road-maps will identify existing services, community strengths, opportunities, promising practices and a set of key strategic activities to consider over the next three years and beyond.

The Coalition will also maintain ties with the Rural Mental Health Project to collaborate with other rural/remote communities across the province and will also maintain connection for additional training, resources and funding.

The proposed schedule is to hold two meetings before Ms. Bovencamp reports back to the RMHN in June 2020. The Organizational Meeting is scheduled for October 16, 2019.

Ideally, a Flagstaff Coalition would include people from all over the county, from all walks of life. If you are interested, she would love to talk further.

For more information Contact Holly at (780) 385-1446 or (780) 385-3976 (FFCS Office)

For more information, check the RMHN website.
