A special meeting of council was held on October 13th with one issue on the agenda being the rescheduling of the regular and organizational meetings which were to occur on October 15th.

Both the October regular and organizational meetings have been rescheduled to Thursday, October 22nd at 6pm. Meetings are held in council chambers at Town office.

The tax deadline for non-residential properties is quickly approaching with October 30th being set by Council earlier in the year. Normally all taxes are due on the last business day of July, however due to Covid-19 Council approved moving the due date for non-residential back several months to help ease the burden the pandemic has caused.

Non-residential accounts that remain unpaid after October 30th will incur a 10% penalty and if the full balance is still unpaid as of January 1st, a further 18% penalty will be added. The Town of Sedgewick accepts cheque, cash, debit or electronic transfers directly from the bank or by email.

The hugely successful Flagstaff Fresh Market will host its final evening in 2020 on Main Street Thursday, October 8th. This is the third market to be held with the first two drawing large crowds to downtown Sedgewick and the third promising much the same.

29 vendors have been confirmed for the night including Metal X Wood Designs, Henry’s Honey, Wildrose Cinnamon Buns, NRG Coffee Co. and many others. Main Street mainstays include Barrio Cusina, The Wooden Spoon, Quirks Bakery and Branch 55. The River Jacks, who played in the first market, are set to return for one more time and will set up in front of the cenotaph.

The market runs from 4:30pm to 7:30pm and organizers would like to remind attendees to take Covid precautions and shop safely.

A podcast on the history of the Town of Sedgewick has been developed by professional podcaster Craig Baird, and was released on September 17th. The episode covers many areas of Sedgewick’s history including the founding of the community, the pahpamiyhaw asiniy meteor, Sedgewick Museum and Archives, Goose Creek School and other fascinated aspects of the Town’s history.

The Flagstaff Fresh Market, which organizers described as ‘beyond successful’ after its pilot run is set to be held again in downtown Sedgewick on Thursday, September 24th. The first market, on August 27th had a great turnout with numerous vendors selling out all of their goods before the end of the evening. Live music filled the street throughout the evening and resulted in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere on Main Street.

The September 24th market is expected to attract even more vendors and will also feature an outdoor rock concert at the south end of Main Street featuring Edmonton cover band RockZilla. RockZilla has made appearances in Sedgewick before, namely at the Town of Sedgewick’s Christmas party in 2018 and also as the after-party act for the Honeymoon Suite, Lee Aaron and Prism show in fall 2019. With Covid-19 restricitions being eased, the band was eager to return to Sedgewick, as they felt a connection with our town through their previous performances.

The market runs from 4:30pm to 8pm with RockZilla playing live at 6pm. The show is free, although the Town of Sedgewick requests that attendees follow Covid-19 protocols at all times.

It has now become even easier for families and nature lovers to make reservations for overnight stays at Sedgewick Lake Park. The park, operated by a local non-profit board, has become the ‘jewel of central Alberta’ in recent years mainly due to the hard work and vision of a group of committed volunteers. The campground has visitors from throughout western Canada year after year mainly due to word-of-mouth.

The new booking system will increase the campground’s profile and provide more online exposure targeting those that looking for new areas to explore and stay.

Council discussed the following issues at their June 18th regular meeting:

The 2020 Canada Day Parade will proceed in Sedgewick on July 1st with the parade commencing at 11am and following its traditional path down Main Street. Those that wish to enter floats are asked to meet at the AP Convenience Store and Gas Bar at 10:45am.

The 4800 block of Main Street will be closed to regular traffic between the hours of 10am and 12pm. Barricades will be strategically placed and parked vehicles will be asked to move to another location.

Due to Covid 19, the Town would like to remind residents and visitors that social distancing is still very important and individuals should always try to keep 2 meters between themselves and others. If you feel that social distancing will be difficult during the parade, the Town recommends that you wear a mask. The Town office is currently distributing free masks and they can be picked up during normal working hours.
